Haindl Tarot

TEN OF CUPS - SUCCESS

NEW TITLE: "INNER FULFILLMENT"

I CHING: 46, SHENG, "PUSHING UPWARD"

REVERSED I CHlNG: 45, TS'UI, "GATHERING TOGETHER"

The Ten of Cups is more complex than the Nine of Cups. There are dark and disturbing elements in it, such as the rock rising from the water, or the stonelike clouds filling the sky. The name change shows Haindl's concern for success at an inner level, a genuine fulfillment.

The hexagram is 46, called by Wilhelm "Pushing Upward" and by Wing "Advancement." In the card we see stone literally pushing up from the surging sea. The hexagram tells us that a climb in life requires an effort of will, but that this brings success. We should not confuse willpower with aggression. The hexagram advises us to seek the help of those already successful. It also advises being adaptable, like wood. The effort is to rise through virtue rather than through force or cunning.

The reversed hexagram remains positive. It stresses the importance of people working together to bring about some shared goal.

In the card the firmness of stone replaces the adaptable wood of the hexagram. Since stone is more long-lasting, it symbolizes the essence of the individual personality, that which rises from the shapeless sea of life. "Inner Fulfillment" comes when we discover our essential nature and bring it to life. In discussing this card Hermann Haindl said that success in life is not something light and simple, but a dark and powerful force. People who find a real purpose in life find themselves carried along. And yet, they need to assert themselves as well. They need to consciously shape their own actions and events around them if they wish to fulfill that purpose, that inner nature. This is part of the esoteric meaning of the evolution of the individual soul. The self, but also the world, becomes transformed - evolved - through each being's effort.

The clouds hint at a situation where success brings some sadness as well as joy. Again, if people try to follow a true path in life, they may find it brings them suffering. And yet, once they recognize that path, they know that happiness is not the only goal. "Inner Fulfillment" does not always - or often - mean pleasure. The rock is ancient. We see a dark hole in the center, signifying mystery. Even for those who seek to fulfill a purpose, much of the path and its meaning remains hidden.

DIVINATORY MEANINGS

In readings, the card indicates a successful development of a situation. This may require some effort by the person, but success is definitely indicated. There may be some clouds hovering over the situation, some unhappy consequences of success. However, other simpler cards can balance this. The Ace of Cups, or the Six of Cups, would emphasize happiness. At a deeper level, and in line with the new title for the card, it can indicate finding a path in life. It shows that a person is fulfilling a purpose. This may not be easy, but the person is moving in the right direction.

REVERSED

The Ten of Cups reversed suggests that something blocks the person's success or fulfillment. As we saw with the card of the Universe, the block may be outside - opposition from others, a difficult situation - or it may come from within - negativity, apathy, or fear. The hexagram suggests that an effort by the person can break through the opposition. The Ten of Cups reversed may also indicate that the person has difficulty discovering a purpose in life (or in an immediate situation). Again, the card indicates that such a purpose exists. The person needs to recognize it.
